Mir Todesangst durch Mark und Bein?
Was rieselt durch die starren Glieder
Und schüttelt mich wie Fieberpein?

Hat alte Blutschuld eingeschrieben

Es steht ein altes Wort geschrieben,

Halbhell ist mir's im Geist geblieben,
Mir klingt's wie: Angst der Kreatur.

Vor Geistern auf dem Schlachtfeld stehen,
Das legt sich auf die Brust wie Blei;
Kann ich dem Feind in's Auge sehen,
Wird wohl der Athem wieder frei.

Und schreitet er in Feindes-Reihen,
der gründlich stets verfuhr:
Es sei! Der Tod nur kann befreien
Von aller Angst der Kreatur!
